Recently Ajman University organized the 4th edition of the “Math Olympiad” contest. Three hundred and sixty 11th grade high school students from 102 different high schools participated in this prestigious event. Students came from a variety of different schools including schools that follow the UAE curricular as well as foreign curricular; all took part in making the event a successful one. The Olympiad represented a great opportunity to realize AU’s goal in community outreach and developing a proactive relationship with young learners in society.
The Olympiad aims at creating the appropriate environment for high-school students to compete in different mathematical areas. Students, were therefore tested on different mathematical topics according to their grade and level of learning to encourage the inherent talents and abilities in students. This would result in creating an innovative environment for mathematics and increase learner interest and motivation in the field. This activity also aims at training students in critical thinking patterns and providing them with more advanced skills and expertise outside of their school curricular. Such tasks would potentially improve their overall understanding of the subject matter, boosting their capabilities and knowledge in mathematics.
This activity was in line with the partnership principle between the Ministry of Education and AU. This framework emphasizes joint efforts between both parties to benefit the UAE society holistically from the implementation of such interactive and educational collaborative programs. The activity will also support educational initiatives and learning development in the UAE, positively affecting the local community in the long term.
The activity was attended by Prof. Cheikh Ould Hamoud, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences, Ms. Saliha Al Mehri, Manager of Recruitment Office, the Organization Committee, faculty members and representatives of participating schools.
A ceremony to honor the winners and appreciate the participating schools will be held on February 26, 2019. The final results of the contest as well as the overall winners of the competition will be announced during the ceremony.
