On 14th September 2022, the Department of Clinical Sciences at the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences conducted its “Preceptor Orientation program-2022” for the practicing hospital and community pharmacists in UAE. The participants were the pharmacy practitioners who were involved in training the B.Pharm and MSc in Clinical Pharmacy students at various hospitals and community pharmacies. The Experiential Learning coordinator and other training team members were the resource persons. The theme of the event was “Patient safety through pharmacovigilance and medication reconciliation”.
The program objective was to orient the Pharmacists involved in student training regarding various experiential training courses offered by the College with emphasis on course learning outcomes, daily log activities, assessment process, etc. In addition, the orientation also had sessions on “Medication reconciliation” and “Pharmacovigilance”.
The Dean, Prof. Nageeb Hassan welcomed the participants and briefed them on the recent curricular changes implemented for B.Pharm and MSc in Clinical Pharmacy programs incorporating more training hours. The Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences, Dr. Muaed Alomar stressed the College’s expectations from the onsite preceptors in training the students.
The program was then continued by the Experiential learning team members. They briefed the participants on the various training courses and tasks to be performed by the students while undergoing training. This was followed by a small group learning (SGL) session on two different topics: ‘Medication Reconciliation and role of Pharmacists’ and ‘Pharmacovigilance and role of Pharmacists’. The sessions included group activities in which the participants worked in small groups and performed assigned tasks related to patient safety.
A total of 22 Hospital and Community pharmacy practitioners attended the event and the program concluded with certificate distribution. The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences considers experiential learning as a unique opportunity for the students to practice pharmacy and experience “Real life scenarios”.
