Integral to Ajman University’s (AU) commitment to excellence is the assurance that language usage in all external and internal communications reflects its image as a leading university in the Arab world, in compliance with the tenets of quality, efficiency and effectiveness. In this regard, provision of clear directives concerning translation and language editing of all AU documents is essential.
This section provides clear guidelines for the translation and language editing services offered by the Office of Marketing and Communication (OMC).
The default language for internal announcements, policies, and procedures addressed to faculty and staff will be English. When translations are necessary, the College/Office should handle it themselves and send the final document(s) to the OMC for one-time proofreading only.
Announcements to students can be done in one or both languages depending on the audience and situation. When translations are necessary, the College/Office should handle it themselves and send the final document(s) to the OMC for one-time proofreading only.
Colleges and offices that need to send other stakeholder announcements, policies, or procedures in both Arabic and English should also handle the translation themselves and send the final document(s) to OMC for one-time proofreading only.
The OMC handles the translation of all strategic announcements and institutional policies required by the Chancellor and the Office of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness as well as other announcements at the level of the University.
The Translator/Editor at the OMC is not expected to create new content, instead s/he supports by identifying errors and/or making suggestions relating to content.
The Glossary of Terms and the Editorial Style Guidelines serve as a reference for AU staff when drafting their announcements in English and/or Arabic.
The translation or the edited version of a simple document (1-2 pages) will be delivered within 2 working days.
The translation or the edited version of a complex document (of more than 3 pages) will be delivered within 5 working days.
All requests are attended to on a first-come first-serve basis. However, this process is subject to change if the OMC receives urgent high-level documents. For instance, priority will be given to all documents sent by the University Cabinet, Deans and Managers.
