The 9th IEEE Information Technology, Electronics and Mobile Communication (IEMCON) 2018 was held at University of British Columbia, Canada between 1-3 November 2018. Ajman University participated in the annual conference, which aimed to bring together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds and emphasize dissemination of ongoing research in the fields of Information Technology and Engineering. This year, the conference welcomed over 1000 participants from 28 countries, namely, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, France, Ghana, India, Iran, Pakistan, China, Egypt, Peru, Mexico, South Korea, Brazil, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Netherlands, Ukraine, Ecuador, Singapore, Taiwan, Bangladesh, KSA, UAE and Oman.
Along with peer-reviewed program of technical presentations, the conference included workshops, business application sessions, tutorials, and demonstration sessions. The conference witnessed 230 technical paper presentations, of which, 10 received the Best Paper Award. All papers selected for presentation will be published in IEEE Xplore Digital Library (Scopus, DBLP, Ei Compendex, Web of Science and Google Scholar)
The research work titled "Intelligent Exoskeleton for Patients with Paralysis", presented by Ms. Tazeen Sharif, Lecturer at College of Engineering and Manager of International Academic Affairs, received the Best Paper Award. The paper proposes a sustainable solution for patients with upper limb paralysis. It comprises of a robotic upper-limb exoskeleton, which is guided using 3D object detection and recognition and further controlled using Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The tremendous work was a collective effort of four electrical engineering students, namely, Anas Al Bakri, Mohammed Yaseen Lezzar, Mohammad Al-Zinati and Khaled Mortazvi. The project was co-supervised by Ms. Tazeen Sharif and Engr. Wessam Sheheib. The prototype is found to be fully functional for most of its features and received much appreciation on its innovative approach effectiveness.
It is worth mentioning that AU’s Team was the only award recipient among all participants from the Middle-East Region. The authors thanked the Dean of College of Engineering – Prof. Fahar Hayati for his continuous support in implementing novel projects and for emphasizing on the importance of engaging in research work. They also extended their gratitude to Dean of Graduate Studies and Research – Prof. Kamran Arshad and AU’s higher management for the support and encouragement towards participation in the conference.
