Sign Language Courses at AU

The Unit of Community Service at Ajman University organized a Sign Language workshop for a group of 20 students from different colleges. The workshop presented by Mr. Salah Odeh, Sign Language Specialist at Community Development Centre in Dubai, lasted over the course of two days.

The workshop highlighted the importance of learning sign language and provided the students with knowledge on how to communicate with people of determination. Along with theory and practice, the participants also played games to grasp the concept of communication.

This workshop comes within the “fast-Forward” program by the Community Service Unit that encourages students to actively participate in community service.

In a similar bid, Professor Safinaz presented a workshop on basic Sign language. It revolved around introducing the basic principles and etiquettes of using this form of communication.

He focused on the use of Arabic language and the principles to adhere to such as face-to-face communication with a deaf person, while keeping the hands at chest level, ensuring the mouth is not covered and ensuring to keep the sentences short.

The participants’ enthusiastic feedback and a keen attitude to learn the basic form of sign language was encouraging. AU strongly supports inclusiveness and encourages students to enhance their skills to better deal with people of determination.
