Ajman University, kept up the tradition of participating at the Ninth Annual Conference on Undergraduate Research on Applied Computing (URC2017) that was held at Zayed University, Dubai. The objective of this conference is to promote undergraduate research activity at educational institutions in the UAE, other Gulf countries, and the rest of the Arab world, by providing a forum for students to present their work and interact with other young researchers, faculty, and industrial leaders. The theme of the conference this year was ICT for Empowering Humanity.
This year’s conference witnessed participants from 11 countries; Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, Algeria and UAE. The conference program included 177 projects: 21 live demos, 32 lightning presentations, and 122 poster presentations.
Participants from UAE were from the following universities: American University in Dubai, Heriott-Watt, BITS Pilani, Khalifa University, University of Wollongong, HCT (Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi), Jumeirah University, AURAK and Ajman University. Among Universities from UAE, only Ajman University projects won prizes, hence we stand 1st in UAE and 3rd on Arab World Level.
Ms. Tazeen Sharif, Acting Manager, Office of International Academic Affairs at Ajman University was invited as a Judge for evaluating Poster Presentations.
The awards received by AU students included Best Lightening Presentation for the project “Wearable Technologies for Firefighters”. It was conceptualized by team Ayah Sandakli, Elaf Mazin, and Sherihan Mostafa; they were supervised by: Ms. Tazeen Sharif and Engr. Wessam Shehieb. The Best Live Demo Award was bagged by the Project “Non-Invasive Vitamin D Detector” presented by team; Rasha Shurrab, Fatima Alsahhar, Shatha Akeil, they were supervised by Dr. Mohamed Nasor and Engr. Mujeeb Ur-Rahman.
The People’s Choice Poster Award was bagged by the project “Autonomous Luggage Cart” the team Ahmed Mohamed Alhadi, Mohamed Temam, Abdulmuhimen Ibrahim, Tarik Abdulelah were supervised by Dr. Hasan Zidan. AU students Mohamed Abdelrahman, Mohamed Rashed, and Ahmed Yousef from Fujairah campus won the Honorable Mention Poster Award for their project “Water Quality Monitoring in UAE using UAVs” they were supervised by Prof. Ali Abou-Elnour.
