AUST Students Volunteer in Clean Up UAE Campaign

As part of the Emirates Environmental Group’s (EEG) vision to bring together all the different sectors of the community, with the shared ambition to be good stewards of the environment, Ajman University participated in the “Clean Up Emirates 2014” Campaign.

The Clean Up UAE Campaign, an environmental program devoted to environmental conservation and sustainability, was launched on Dec.12, 2002 involving four Emirates — Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi. Due to its popularity and the support it has drawn in from government and private organizations, EEG went on to involve all the seven Emirates in the campaign since 2005. Through the years, this national campaign has acquired outstanding scope and stature as more and more people and sites joined the movement for a clean, green and sustainable UAE and the campaign has now transformed itself and emerged as a national initiative that goes beyond the boundaries of region, race, nationality, gender, economic status and the like. The event has also expanded to include a slew of activities such as tree planting, making it a much anticipated and widely embraced environmental campaign.

These activities have been able to create a culture of collective efforts for the cause of nature and environment. The need to keep the city clean is not just a municipal activity but has become the responsibility of every citizen.

Over the past few years, the campaign has emerged as one of the best community-based initiatives. It not only helps raise awareness but was also instrumental in disposing huge amounts of waste at designated areas.

In Ajman, the area selected to be the campaign’s target was Al Hamidiya. Environment-conscious volunteers from several education institutions, including Ajman University students, joined hands in cleaning the area and preserving the environment.
