AUST researchers to produce thermal insulation guide for Dubai buildings

Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST) and the Buildings Department of Dubai Municipality (DM) have recently signed a cooperation agreement, under which AUST will conduct a study aimed at issuing a detailed and comprehensive inventory of all types of buildings constructed before 2003 and propose the best thermal insulation methods and specifications that are technically, practically and economically appropriate for each type of those buildings.

Leading the study, Dr. Sahar Najib Kharoufah and Mrs. Sahar Makki from the AUST’s Architectural Engineering Department presented the findings of their research so far in a symposium held by the Dubai’s Buildings Department on the theme “Ways and Methods of Thermal Insulation for Existing Buildings Constructed before the DM Resolution of 2003”. The session was attended by more than 200 engineers from the municipality staff along with stakeholders in the private sector including consulting engineers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and investors.

The guide to be produced by AUST researchers aims to reduce energy waste used in air-cooling, which represents about 70% of the total energy consumption of the buildings in question.

According to a DM official, the study is now 60% complete and would be finalized by the end of May 2013.
