Congrats to AU students for Winning in UAE Hackathon for the 4th Time in a Row

A team of four students from the College of Engineering and Information Technology at Ajman University (AU) won the first place in the Dubai edition of the prestigious UAE Hackathon 4.0. for demonstrating how technology could be used in favour of humanity.

With the aim of deterring child sexual abuse, Marwa Alshouli, Somaya Samra, Bashayer Alasfour and Shamma Hareb created an innovative application that detects sexual abuse, notifies the parents, and takes a picture of the assaulter. The project was completed under the supervision and guidance of Professor Mustahsan Mir, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and Mr. Wessam Shehieb, Teaching Assistant at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

This project aligns perfectly with AU core values of promoting community engagement and supporting the needs of the local and global communities. “Child sexual abuse has a high chance of going unnoticed even though it has a great negative impact on the child which can last for a lifetime. Therefore, we wanted to design a smart system that is simple, safe, unnoticeable and affordable to protect children from all forms of physical violence”, said the team.

The originality of their project is based on a unique system that provides multiple fear indicators of fear to ensure accurate detection of the child’s situation and offers constant connection between the child and the parent. Moreover, the overall expenses of the project’s production and implementation are very low.

It is worth noting that two alumni teams won the first place in Sharjah and the second place in Ras Al-Khaimah.
