Shakespeare’s Greatness in Ajman University Cultural Salon

The Counseling Unit of the Deanship of Student Services, Ajman University (AU), geared up to develop students’ awareness on the importance of reading, has run an important cultural salon on “Shakespeare’s Greatness” on November 19.

The function, moderated by Dr. Dalia Bedewy, Director of the Counseling Unit, is part of a series of literary discussions AU organizes on monthly basis in the presence of guest speakers from the University and elsewhere.

Dr. Bilal Zakarneh, Head of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​at Ajman University, enlightened the audience with an informative talk on William Shakespeare’s life, poetry and plays, and gave a brief background on the 16th – 17th century English literature.

Dr. Andrew Joseph, Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, spoke about Shakespeare's literary and educational formation and its impact on his literature, while Dr. Ghanim Al-Samarrai, Associate Professor at the University of Sharjah, spoke extensively about Shakespeare's sonnets and made a comparison between his poetry and plays.

Finally, Dr. Tabitha Kenlon, Assistant Professor at the American University in Dubai, gave a talk on the background of Shakespeare's plays:  tragedies, comedies and histories.

Meanwhile, the audience, including student and faculty lovers of literature, paid tributes to the Counseling Unit for organizing such valuable literary and cultural discussions.
