AU Students Mark International Day of Sign Languages

Ajman University (AU), as part of its commitment to social responsibility, has run a special workshop to celebrate the ‘International Day of Sign Languages’.

The function, organised by the Unit of Community Service, saw the participation of 26 male and female students from different colleges.

Nada Rasem, a spokesperson with the Pomegranate Institute, said her training centre is an educational platform that utilizes language learning, personal & professional development as primary tools to equip people with the right set of skills.

She then gave a presentation on the history and basics of the American Sign language to the students present.

What was exciting about the event was the active engagement of six determined people with hearing impairments.

Abdelsalam Zourob, a determined lecturer, further enlightened the students on the same sign language.

“It’s one of the sustainable projects we have been doing since 2015.”

Noor Al Chaghouri, Head of Community Service, said the workshop is aimed to raise students’ awareness about sign languages. “We want to engage students with determined people.”

Batoul Sharbek, a student with the College of Pharmacy and Health Science, said the workshop was very useful.

“Learning a sign language from the people of determination was really a precious opportunity. This experience really touched my heart.”

Sundous Almourad, a student with College of Engineering and Information Technology, said she also enjoyed and learnt a lot from the workshop.

“We have learnt how to say our names, places and some things in sign language.  It was an amazing experience and hope to see them again.”
