Ajman University Develops Students Breast Cancer Awareness

While breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Ajman University (AU) has run a number of workshops to develop students’ awareness about the killer disease. The AU students were enlightened that around 2.1 million are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, while men also suffer from the same killer disease in relatively rare cases, as per the WHO figures. “It has also been seen as the cause of the highest number of cancer-related deaths - but the thing is, if it is detected early enough, chances of survival can go as high as 98 per cent.”

The AU students were urged to work out on a regular basis to boost their immune system and remain clear of such deadly disease that have become a global phenomenon. The students were also briefed on the healthy foods they are advised to consume and the unhealthy foods they should avoid. Brochures on the main reasons and symptoms of breast cancer were distributed to the participating students, as part of the UAE Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They were also provided with some tips to reduce the risks of developing the killer diseases. The Office of Medical Services, AU, in collaboration with Dr. Arwa Al Harrazi, a surgeon with the Amina Medical Centre, carried clinical check-ups for interested students of local community. Similar workshops and activities were held at the Student Residence to enlighten more students on breast cancer. Meanwhile, AU students participated in the nationwide ‘Pink Caravan’ by walking for 2.5km around the Damac Hills compound in support of the survivors of the killer disease. The participation was open to all public in UAE community.
