Ajman University (AU) hosted an extended two-day event about data science as part of the Google Developer Student Club’s ongoing series of events. Abdulrahman Sobeih and Maryam Almetnawy, students from AU’s College of Engineering and Information Technology, gave the 30 participating students an introduction to the world of data and an insightful data science project that they worked on during the workshop.
During the workshop, students learned about the three foundational pillars of data science—computer science, statistics, and domain knowledge. Students were introduced to the data analysis and machine learning tools used by Data Scientists, such as "Google Colaboratory (Colab)" and "Jupyter notebook," to give them an understanding of the environment and possibilities available to them while working on the project, in addition to an introduction to Python and R programming languages.
Students used "Google Colab" to carry out Python-based methodologies and principles for profiling, cleaning, and data visualization that are essential to the data science life cycle.
This was followed by an explanation of Machine Learning and an introduction to the most popular ML algorithms used to construct ML Models. The students were also given the chance to learn about business intelligence dashboards using PowerBl, where they could see an illustration of what the end user's experience might be.
Tamara Hamad, second year student at the College of Engineering and Information Technology said: “The workshop was incredibly educational and undoubtedly aided our understanding of data science and how to use various programming languages for machine learning. Additionally, it assisted us in learning how to extract information from the raw data that is currently being generated in massive quantities every day. In general, it was a wonderful experience.”
By the end of the workshop, participating students had a better understanding of what a real-life data science project looks like.
All attendees received a certificate of participation in appreciation for their efforts, which they can use on their resumes and social media accounts.
