Ajman University’s Dr. Ahmed Godat, Associate Professor at the College of Engineering and Information Technology, attended the 3rd International Civil Engineering and Architecture Conference held in Kyoto, Japan from 17-20 March 2023 (http://www.ceac.net/).
Dr. Ahmed was awarded the Excellent Oral Presentation certificate at the conference for his paper entitled 'Finite Element Simulation of Externally Prestressed Girders.'
“The main purpose of our study was to develop a three-dimensional finite-element model that is able to simulate the entire behaviour of externally prestressed (EP) reinforced concrete (RC) girders,” said Dr. Ahmed, explaining his award-winning paper.
Dr. Ahmed added, “In the model, appropriate geometrical elements were used to represent the behaviour of the concrete, steel reinforcement and EP tendons. The EP tendons were modelled with truss elements connected to the concrete at specific locations, as was the case for the laboratory experiments. Sensitivity analysis was performed for finite element modelling of specimens to optimize the mesh size and the number of nodes per element. The numerical predictions of the finite element model were compared with various configurations and materials of EP tendons. It was shown that the numerical predictions compared very well with experimental measurements in terms of ultimate loading capacities, load-deflection relationships, and failure modes. The numerical predictions are used to provide useful information of the cracking progress and strain profiles of the simulated girders."
