The College of Dentistry at Ajman University organized a workshop titled “Myofunctional therapy from Dysfunction to Harmony in Clinical Practice”, presented by Dr. Fadi Antar, Clinical Instructor at the Paediatric Dental Department at the Lebanese University. The workshop was attended by a large number of faculty members and postgraduate students from the College of Dentistry.
During the workshop, students learned how to assess and diagnose soft tissue dysfunction, and breathing conditions using the Myofunctional Evaluation Form, in addition to issues related to orofacial muscle function, including tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and breathing habits. They also gained the ability to recognize signs of malocclusion and other orthodontic problems associated with myofunctional issues to prevent or reduce the need for fixed orthodontics in the future. If necessary, the process would be less complicated, and results can be achieved promptly without the need for retention appliances.
The workshop emphasized the importance of collaboration and communication among speech therapists, dentists, and ENT specialists, encouraging them to work as an integrated team to identify and diagnose the patients’ health condition, and ensure the best outcomes for them. Through this close collaboration and effective communication among these specialized teams, comprehensive and well-balanced healthcare can be provided to patients with the highest levels of quality and efficiency.
The workshop received positive feedback from all participants. The College of Dentistry intends to build on the success of this workshop by integrating this training into the clinical curriculum of postgraduate students.
This step reflects the university’s commitment to providing effective learning experience for students, to develop their skills and practical abilities in their respective fields, and prepare them for the future. Moreover, it highlights the competence of the faculty members and Ajman University’s ability to provide excellent educational programs.
