An all-female team of Engineering students from Ajman University (AU) won the second place at the International Student Scientific Poster Competition held at the 5th ASET Multi-Conference in Dubai.
ASET or Advances in Sciences and Engineering Technology (ASET) 2023 multi-conference was hosted by Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), Dubai from Feb 20-23.
The AU team’s winning project termed “Unlocking the Hidden Spectrum: Hyperspectral Reconstruction for Skin Cancer Detection," aims to revolutionize the way skin cancer is detected by utilizing hyperspectral imaging, a technology that enables a more precise and detailed analysis of skin tissue.
The students used machine learning algorithms and image processing techniques to develop a system that can analyse skin images and detect cancerous cells.
The team comprising Sana Ali Ahmed Abouelnour, Ragad Moustafa Ahmed, Sondos Mahmoud Yousef Bsharat, Sama Mohamed Essameldin Gaber, and Mariam El Khatib bagged the second place from among a total of 45 participants.
“Participating in the competition was a challenging and rewarding experience. We were honoured to be in the company of other talented students, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share our research with industry experts. Winning second place was a great achievement and it inspires us to continue our work in this field,” the students said.
The International Student Scientific Poster Competition is an integral part of the ASET 2023 multi-conferences. It is open to students enrolled in an undergraduate engineering program (all disciplines) in the UAE, the GCC region and the world.
Students are permitted to exhibit their undergraduate senior design projects’ posters in this contest, to enhance the culture of competition and enable them to exchange experiences with their peers from other universities and colleges.
