On October 10, 2022, the Counseling Unit, in collaboration with the Office of Community Engagement, organized an event on "World Mental Health Day" in Shaikh Zayed Hall. The event was open to all UAE community and aimed to raise global awareness about mental health issues. The event featured interactive stations prepared by the Psychology Department and College of Medicine students and a rejuvenating Yoga Class session.
Dr. Lina Almarestani, Chair of the Department of Psychology and Associate Professor of Psychology at the American University in Dubai, graced the event as a guest speaker. She conducted a workshop emphasizing the importance of prioritizing one's mental well-being. Dr. Gabriel Andrade and Dr. Jigna Sttot from the College of Medicine also led a collaborative problem-sharing session.
Furthermore, an informative workshop titled "Mental Health for All: Can We Make It a Reality" was presented by Dr. Ahmad Alzubi and Dr. Abderrahim Benlahcene from the College of Humanities and Sciences. This event provided a platform for all attendees to engage in meaningful discussions about the continued efforts needed to make mental health care accessible to people worldwide.
The event saw an enthusiastic turnout, with participation from faculty, staff members, students, and esteemed guests, who provided overwhelmingly positive feedback. This initiative aligns with SDG #3, which focuses on promoting well-being for all, including mental health, and working to reduce the stigma associated with mental health challenges. It underscores the importance of making mental health care accessible to all community members, reflecting Ajman University's commitment to the well-being of its students and society, fostering a healthier and more empathetic community.
