Counseling Unit Events for Fall 2021/2022:

 

Mind-shift: Welcome to University

 On August 24, the Counseling Unit organized a workshop for students, presented by Dr. Zehra Edis, Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. This comprehensive workshop covered a range of topics, including essential university insights, common student challenges, strategies for enhancing focus, effective time management techniques, guidance on building positive relationships within the university, and the fundamental keys to academic success.

Getting a Smart Start

On August 25, the Counseling Unit organized a group meeting on Zoom between Ajman University current and new students, and it was moderated by Dr. Dalia Bedewy, Manager of the Counseling Unit. The students shared their experiences and tips on time management and how to improve social life in university.

Impact of Mental Health on Academics

 The Counseling Unit hosted a workshop on August 25th, focusing on the significance of mental health and the services offered by the Counseling Unit. The aim was to familiarize participants with the support available to them and to foster a sense of security by highlighting the presence of a dedicated and expert team. Dr. Dalia Bedewy, the Manager of Counseling Unit, led the presentation, which also encompassed strategies for effectively coping with stress and dispelling negative thought patterns.

Creative Thinking for Self-Development

On September 23, the Counseling Unit hosted a workshop featuring Dr. Amal Badr, Assistant Professor in the College of Mass Communication. This workshop covered various aspects of creative thinking, including its definition, the traits commonly found in creative individuals, the challenges one might face in creative thinking, and effective strategies for overcoming those obstacles.

Tolerance and its Impact on Building Relationships

On October 6, the Counseling Unit hosted a workshop featuring Ms. Sahar Zahran, Lecturer in the College of Humanities and Sciences. This workshop delved into the concept of tolerance, covering its definition, various types, what it signifies, and the advantages of practicing tolerance.

AU Debate Series Titled: Overusing Social Media: Is It an Addiction?

On October 10, the Counseling Unit hosted a debate featuring experts, and moderated by Dr. Dalia Bedewy, Manager of the Counseling Unit. The presenters included Dr. Ahmed Moustafa, Associate Professor at Western Sydney University – Australia; Ms. Nelly Nabil Naguib, PhD Candidate at Cairo University; Dr. Rasha Abdelrahman, Assistant Professor at Ajman University; Dr. Eid Abohamza, Associate Professor at Ajman University; Dr. Alaa Alsharif, Assistant Professor at Ajman University; and Fatima Elameen, student from the College of Humanities and Sciences at Ajman University.

This debate explored diverse viewpoints, examining the pros and cons of social media.

Because you are the Life

On October 27, the Counseling Unit hosted an informative virtual awareness workshop on breast cancer, featuring Dr. Ibrahim Bani, Associate Professor in the College of Medicine. This workshop encompassed a comprehensive discussion of various aspects, including an introduction to cancer, specific insights into breast cancer, its societal impact, epidemiology, risk factors contributing to its development, methods for breast cancer detection and prevention, emphasizing five healthy habits, dietary strategies such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and recommendations for physical activity.

Building Trust in COVID-19 and Seasonal Influenza Shots 

On November 1, the Counseling Unit hosted a workshop featuring Dr. Yehia Mohamed, Associate Professor in the College of Medicine, and Dr. Gabriel Andrade, Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine. The workshop was moderated by Dr. Dalia Bedewy, Manager of the Counseling Unit.

The workshop covered a wide range of important topics, including the vital role of vaccination in preserving human health, addressing COVID-19 vaccine conspiracy theories, effective strategies for persuading individuals about the benefits of vaccines, the significance of influenza vaccination in the context of the COVID-19 era, recommendations for who should receive the flu shot, the timing and necessity of annual shots, considerations for priority groups, and how the flu behaves in vaccinated individuals. This engaging event drew a substantial attendance from students, all of whom demonstrated a keen interest in the subject matter.

Discrimination and Hate Versus Equality and Pluralism 

On November 4, the Counseling Unit conducted a virtual workshop led by Dr. Khaled Aljasmi, Assistant Professor in the College of Law. The workshop explored concepts like discrimination and equity, delving into the underlying causes of discrimination and hatred. It also shed light on how the UAE addresses various issues, emphasizing the significance of embracing individuals from diverse nationalities and backgrounds. Additionally, the workshop discussed the consequences of discrimination and hatred, offering insights on transforming one's mindset to foster acceptance of others and providing valuable life advice for all attendees.

COVID-19 Vaccine: What to worry about? 

On November 18, the Counseling Unit hosted a workshop featuring Dr. Ahmad Alzubi, Associate Professor in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Ajman University, and Dr. Ahmed Sallam, Counselor at the Disability Resource Center at the University of Sharjah. The workshop was moderated by Dr. Dalia Bedewy, Manager of the Counseling Unit.

This workshop tackled several critical topics, including concerns related to COVID-19 infection, the reasons behind vaccine hesitancy, effective strategies for coping with stress, anxiety, and addressing vaccine-related concerns. It aimed to provide clarity and promote greater acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines.

Happiness Capsule 

On November 21, the Counseling Unit hosted a workshop led by Ms. Nouf Alnuaimi, Lecturer in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Ajman University. This workshop provided valuable insights into the concept of happiness, offering six practical tools for achieving and maintaining happiness. Additionally, it guided participants through steps to transition to higher-self traits, cope with stress, and alleviate emotional distress.

Ajman University Cultural Salon 

On November 22, the Counseling Unit hosted a Cultural Salon dedicated to the exploration of the poetic works of Dr. Mustafa Bouanani, Poet and Academic. This enlightening session was led by Professor and Poet Mustafa Bouanani, from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Morocco, and joined by Professor and Literary Critic Jean Abdallah, Head of the Arabic Language and Literature Department at Jinan University in Lebanon. The event was moderated by Professor Abdelghani Bara, faculty member in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

The event featured the recitation of a selection of Dr. Mustafa Bouanani's poems, which were subject to literary analysis and critique. The event attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty, and staff members, who provided positive feedback on this enriching experience.

Smart Preparation for Exams 

On November 25, The Counseling Unit in collaboration with Timetable and Exams Committee at the College of Humanities and Sciences organized a workshop presented by Dr. Mohd. AL Taher, Associate Dean & Associate Professor at College of Humanities and Sciences, Dr. Eid Galal Abohamza, Associate Professor at College of Humanities and Sciences, Dr. Amel Beichi, Assistant Professor at College of Humanities and Sciences, two students from College of Humanities and Sciences, and moderated by Dr. Dalia Bedewy, Manager of Counseling Unit. This workshop focused on three main points: Pomodoro Technique, skills Active Recall, and ways to deal with exam anxiety.

Self-awareness and Emotional Management

On November 29, the Counseling Unit organized a virtual workshop presented by Dr. Walaa Elsayed, Assistant Professor in College of Humanities and Sciences. This workshop introduced the benefits of the Self-Awareness and Emotional Management, how to become more self-aware, and ways to manage emotions properly.
