The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Ajman University held its preceptor orientation for the second semester of the academic year 2017/2018. The meeting was held in the presence of Prof. Nageeb Hassan, Dean, College of Pharmacy along with Head of Departments, Coordinator of Office of Experiential Learning, College faculty and representatives from health institutions, hospitals, pharmaceutical industry and community pharmacies.
Amongst the items discussed during the meeting included the training needs for the B.Pharm, Master’s and the proposed PharmD programs. The need for expanding training sites and hospitals and offering a variety of training types, changes in the training structure in the new BPharm, Master’s and upcoming PharmD programs were examined.
Moreover, the learning outcomes in the training courses were discussed thoroughly to inform the preceptors of the competencies expected to be achieved in the courses, and the training site contribution in achieving these learning outcomes. To give preceptors an impression of the assessments carried out at the College to assure student competence, a detailed discussion of the assessments is given, including the preceptor evaluation of students’ performance during training. Preceptors were briefed about the importance of objectively evaluating students and assigning grades that match student knowledge, skill and performance. Preceptors were given copies of the training manuals prepared by the Office of Experiential Learning that map issues relating to training of students in different field sites including student code of conduct, dress code, attendance/excuse policy, expectations from preceptors towards training in addition to expected outcomes and all assessment forms of these outcomes.
As a gesture of continued partnership between the College and preceptors, avenues of research collaborations were explored such as a research project involving an asthma training program offered by the University to interested preceptors. Several preceptors showed interest in participating.
