Organizer office: Health Services

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) with serious health consequences, including cervical cancer and genital warts.

The Office of Medical Services (OMS) at AU, in collaboration with Manzil Health Care Services – Dubai, hosted an informative webinar titled "HPV-Related Cancers – Act Today to Protect Tomorrow"- on January 30, 2025.

Presented by Dr. Adil Sajwani, Consultant of Family Medicine at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital in Dubai, the session emphasized HPV vaccination as the most effective prevention strategy, highlighting the importance of early immunization and prioritizing reproductive health education. It also underscored the role of academic institutions in providing stigma-free, evidence-based HPV awareness.

Key focus areas included HPV awareness campaigns, comprehensive sexual health education, and vaccination promotion, equipping students with essential knowledge for responsible health decisions, lowering the probability of STI transmission, and advancing gender equality in healthcare access, further supporting Universal Health Coverage, aligning with WHO’s 2030 roadmap to eradicate cervical cancer.

With hundreds of students and staff in attendance, the webinar had a significant impact in promoting health-conscious behaviors within the university community. It played a key role in increasing awareness and encouraging male students to take greater responsibility in the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The session emphasized safe practices, the importance of regular health check-ups, and the role of shared accountability in maintaining sexual health. As a result, male participants were more informed and motivated to adopt proactive, preventive behaviors, reflecting a shift toward greater personal responsibility and health consciousness.

By fostering expert-led discussions and proactive health initiatives, AU remains committed to ensuring students are informed, protected, and empowered to lead healthier lives.
