HPV Infection: A Milestone in Implementing WHO’s SDG 3 Through Student Education on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Prevention.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) with serious health consequences, including cervical cancer and genital warts. In alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3)-which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and combating communicable diseases.

The Office of Medical Services (OMS) at AU, in collaboration with Manzil Health Care Services – Dubai, hosted an informative webinar titled "HPV-Related Cancers – Act Today to Protect Tomorrow"- on January 30, 2025.

Presented by Dr. Adil Sajwani, Consultant of Family Medicine at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital – Dubai, the session emphasized HPV vaccination as the most effective prevention strategy and the importance of early immunization.

This initiative supports WHO’s SDG 3.7, which prioritizes reproductive health education, and highlights the role of academic institutions in providing stigma-free, evidence-based HPV awareness.

Key focus areas included HPV awareness campaigns, comprehensive sexual health education, and vaccination promotion, equipping students with essential knowledge for responsible health decisions.

These efforts contribute to lowering STI transmission, improving reproductive health, and advancing gender equality in healthcare access, further supporting Universal Health Coverage (SDG 3.8).

Expanding HPV education through multi-sectoral collaborations between health organizations and universities is crucial to eliminating HPV-related diseases, strengthening global STI prevention, and aligning with WHO’s 2030 roadmap to eradicate cervical cancer.

By fostering expert-led discussions and proactive health initiatives, AU remains committed to ensuring students are informed, protected, and empowered to lead healthier lives.
