As part of our ongoing efforts to promote the health and wellness of the AU community, in alignment with UN SDG-3 and the WHO's principle of "Self-care for Health care," the Office of Medical Services, in collaboration with the Office of Student Housing, hosted a special event titled "Hands-On Breast Self-Examination: A Life-Saving Practice" on 16 October 2024 at the Female Hostel. The event aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer among female residents.
The session emphasized the importance of conducting monthly Breast Self-Examinations (BSE). Attendees actively participated in a practical learning activity, where they had the opportunity to explore both normal and abnormal anatomical breast simulation models. These interactive sessions were followed by discussions to enhance understanding.
To promote access to continuous care, attendees were invited to the Medical Clinic on campus, where they can benefit from one-on-one demonstrations of BSE, clinical examinations, and consultations with our medical team.
The event also featured pink-themed refreshments and certificates of attendance for participants. Additionally, special offers for breast screenings were provided by our external healthcare partners.
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in promoting health awareness within the community. Impactful events like these not only empower individuals with knowledge but also foster a supportive environment focused on well-being and self-care, and enhance the health and wellness of our AU community.
