Speech Title: The impact of Generative AI, including GPT, on Research, Education, and Society
Dr. Taha served as the Head of the Computer Science Department at the University of Georgia (UGA) during the period 2013 to 2022. He played a major role in transitioning it into a School of Computing and was appointed as an Interim Director for the School. During his tenure in the administrator position, the number of the Computer Science majors has increased by threefold, the number of graduate students has doubled and the number of faculty expanded from 22 to 44. During his tenure, a Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute was established, and several academic programs, including an MS in Cybersecurity and Privacy along with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Data Science, and an MS in Cybersecurity and Privacy.
Dr. Taha’s areas of research are in the areas of Computational Science, System Biology, and Data Science. He has over 90 publications in esteemed journals and conferences, and served as the Guest/Managing Editor for more than 10 Special Issues in MATCOM, and APNUM journals published by Elsevier. His research was supported by grants from DOE, NSF, DoD, Intel, and Northeastern University.
Dr. Taha is the Vice President of IMACS, Co- Editor-in-Chief of the APNUM journal, Associate Editor of the IAJIT journal, and a Senior member of ACM. He is the recipient of the 1985 M. G. Michael Awards for Research in Science, and a 1995 Fulbright Scholar. He had an Honorable appointment as the Guest Professorship of Harbin Engineering University, China in 2017. He served as the Program Chair and Conference coordinator of the IMACS International Conferences on: “Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Wave Phenomena:” Computation and Theory”, from 1999 to present.
